Meet the HUES Staff


Nicole A. Carter, MPH, PHD, Founder and Executive Director
Founder of HUES Women's Health Advocacy Institute, a nonprofit that fosters opportunities for community and personal advocacy, dialogue, and research for and by BIPOC women. She is also the CEO of The Sis Brand, LLC.
Prior to HUES, Dr. Carter directed an University women's advocacy center and academic degree program for 7 1/2 years. For 13 years, she taught undergraduate and graduate courses in Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, African and African American Studies, Sociology, and Social Foundations of Education.
Dr. Carter received her Master of Public Health from the Department of Population and Public Health Sciences, Boonshoft School of Medicine, and her PhD from Eastern Michigan University in addition to other graduate degrees.
She is a certified mindfulness and breathwork facilitator, and is certified in Youth and Adult Mental Health Intervention, Suicide Prevention, and Trauma Informed Care.

Charene Thornton, M.S., Coordinator of Operations & Internship Programs
Coordinates the organization's logistical activities and communication, and supervises interns employed through the organization's seven month internship program.
Charene is a long-time advocate of the greater Dayton community. She is dedicated to advancing the health and wellness of BIPOC communities in an equitable and inclusive manner. She serves as a volunteer in the Greater Dayton community.
Prior to HUES, Charene served on Wright State University's campus in the School of Nursing, and Career Services. She received her undergraduate degree from Wilberforce University, and a graduate degree from Wright State University.

Ebony Martin, MBA., Coordinator of Employee Culture and Engagement
Creates and coordinates the organizations strategic hiring practices, and works to maintain the inclusive and equitable culture of the organization through creating opportunities for mentorship, shadowing, and active learning.
Ebony has been in leadership positions with JCPenney Corporation, Barnes and Noble-College Division, and Michaels Craft Stores.
She is a three-time graduate of Southern New Hampshire University with specializations in Business Management and Human Resource Management.

Nate Edmunds, BA., Administrative Coordinator
Supports executive staff in the execution of daily planning execution of tasks.
Nate is an experienced workforce management supervisor with a demonstrated history in financial services, sales, customer relations and experiences, data analytics, business process improvement, and leadership.
He is a graduate of Eastern Michigan University.
